Messaging candidates

Updated November 4, 2026

You can message any candidate who has said yes to your company, right inside Cherrypicker. Messaging is free and doesn't use credits.

Who you can message

A conversation opens once a candidate:

  • accepts your introduction request, or
  • says they're interested in one of your roles (for a job you shared with the Talent Network, you'll need to unlock them first).

Knowing who someone is isn't enough on its own. A candidate you sourced or recruited becomes available to message once they say yes to your company.

Start a conversation

  1. Click Chat in the sidebar.
  2. Click New at the top of the page (or Start a Conversation if you don't have any conversations yet). These appear when someone is available to message.
  3. Pick a candidate from the list. It shows everyone who has expressed interest and doesn't have a conversation with you yet.
  4. Type your message and press Enter, or click the send button.

Conversations belong to your company, so your teammates see the same threads.

Attach a document

Click the paperclip to attach up to 5 files to a message. Each file can be up to 10 MB, in PDF, DOC, DOCX, PNG, JPG, TXT or RTF format.

Finding and managing conversations

  • Search conversations by name.
  • Sort by Most Recent, Earliest, A to Z or Z to A, or filter by Date range.
  • Use the menu on a conversation, or select several, to Mark as Read.

To tidy your list, open a chat's menu and click Archive. You can find it under Archived chats and click Unarchive to bring it back. Nothing is deleted, and a new message moves the chat back to your list.

The Chat item in the sidebar shows a badge when candidates have sent messages you haven't read.

How candidates are notified

When you send a message, the candidate gets an in-app notification, plus a push notification if they use the Cherrypicker mobile app. Unread messages are also gathered into an occasional email summary, so candidates aren't sent one email per message.

How you're notified

When a candidate writes to you, you get an in-app notification. Cherrypicker also emails you a summary of unread conversations, at most once a day, rather than one email per message. You can turn these emails off; see Notifications.

If you can't send a message

"You can still read this conversation, but new messages can't be sent." The candidate can't be contacted through Cherrypicker any more. Your chat history stays in your account.
